Philip Walter O'Larey
date of birth October 23 1931
date of death December 9 2019
On December 9, 2019, Philip Walter O'Larey passed away peacefully with his family around him, at the age of 88.
Phil was born on October 23, 1931, in Wenatchee, WA, to Phil and Lucy (Watts) O’Larey. After high school, he enlisted and served as a Navy Air Corpsman in the Korean War. After four years in the navy, he received his bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Washington and married Susanne Marie D’Italia on January 4, 1958. The next year, they moved to Oregon and eventually Lake Oswego, where they raised two sons, Phil and Tim. He had a successful and rewarding career in the brokerage business, with 23 years with Smith Barney. He loved his job and the people he worked with. After the passing of his first wife, Sue, in December 1987, he married Laureen Patricia Hamburg on February 24, 1990. Their passion for travel took them all around the globe. After retirement, he took up golf, a sport that brought him many friendships. Later in life, they began to spend their winters in their beloved Hawaii where he was king of the BBQ and enjoyed his “second” family around the golf course and pool.
Phil enjoyed an active family life. He was coach of his sons' Little League teams and took the family on many camping, fishing, and rafting weekends through the years. Big summer vacations included trips to Crater Lake, Sequoia, Glacier, and Yellowstone National Parks. He also enjoyed his sports with the Portland Trail Blazers his favorite. Like many Blazer fans, he would turn the volume off when they were on TV and listen to Bill Schonely call the game on the radio. He was also a loyal Washington Huskies fan, even if he did only know the first line of the fight song. He was known for his infectious smile, quick wit, and kind spirit.
Phil is survived by his wife Laureen, his two sons, Phil, and his wife Jean, and Tim, and his wife Mary Ellen, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and older brother Terry, his only sibling.
A service will be held at St. Cyril Parish, 9205 SW 5th St., Wilsonville, OR, at 3:00 PM, Tuesday, December 17th. All are welcome. Please direct any memorial donations to St. Rita’s Catholic Church, Nanakuli, HI, or the ALK Positive Research fund (alkpositive.org).
